The International Propeller Club Ports of Catania and Southeastern Sicily: A Net of Professionals to Service of the Sea

14 Giugno, 2024

The Propeller Club is an international association that grew out of the initiative of a small group of New York maritime entrepreneurs who, towards the end of 1922, met frequently over breakfast to discuss and solve problems of common interest relating to maritime transport. The name ‘PROPELLER’ was chosen to symbolise the propelling force of this maritime-derived association. Over time, other similar groups were formed throughout the United States, all of which were interested in maritime transport, related industries and port activities. The idea crossed the oceans in 1932, landing in Genoa, again under the auspices of the American Propeller. It was only in 1986 that the Propeller Port of Genoa succeeded in having an autonomous life with respect to its American mother, constituting “THE INTERNATIONAL PROPELLER CLUBS” with the aim, no longer of lobbying, but of spreading the culture of the sea and promoting meetings between people working in the sector. From there, it spread to many other seaside cities (and not only) on the Italian peninsula. For a long time, Catania was a section of The International Propeller Club Port of Palermo, established in 1999. In recent years, however, a renewed social conscience has made local professionals feel the need to place themselves at the service of their territory. Thus, in June 2023, the autonomous The International Propeller Club Ports of Catania & Southeastern Sicily was born: the first systemic Propeller in the association’s history.

The idea is to create a sea system around a homogeneous territorial area with complementary resources, so as to create an interplay of forces and scenarios that will increase the results in terms of effectiveness and efficiency of projects and services with an undeniable multiplier of development for all the areas in the system. On the other hand, it is undeniable that the economy is now interconnected, goes beyond the boundaries of individual metropolitan cities and is based on an interchange of labour.
With this in mind, the newly-established Propeller Port of Catania has deemed it useful to unite the entire territory of South-East Sicily with which it shares a common port project, cultural inspiration, industrial and entrepreneurial dynamics, and the same approach to work.
Thus, professionals from the shipping and yachting, maritime industry and maritime tourism, maritime logistics and cruising, security and management, trainers and communicators, belonging to the civil and military institutions of the sea, from the entire south-eastern area of Sicily, offering their skills and peculiarities, have decided to sit around an apolitical and non-partisan table with the sole interest of promoting, supporting and developing all maritime activities, in order to improve human relations and international relations in the sector; to promote trade, public relations and the spirit of friendship and common purposes among people engaged and interested in sea-related activities; to foster training and technical, cultural and professional upgrading among all those belonging to the economic and professional categories related to maritime activities; to promote the meeting and reunion of people whose common efforts can enable the achievement of important objectives for the development of the relevant territory.

With the primary objective of achieving the above-mentioned goals, in its first year of life, the Club has planned three meetings focusing on the three major maritime realities of the systemic area of interest: The sea economy: a lever for the economic development of the Catania area; Green economy and sustainable growth: the role of the port of Augusta in the production of alternative energies; The agri-food chain in south-eastern Sicily and the transport of goods by sea through the port of Pozzallo.

The first of these three major events was held, with great satisfaction, on 11 April at the Palazzo della Cultura in Catania. During the meeting, the authoritative personalities who attended dealt, with the concreteness that we want to distinguish us, with the theme of the economic development of the city that can result from the investments of local companies in the blue economy.

The recognition received here from Mayor of Catania, Enrico Trantino, to our role as a promoter of the diffusion of the culture of the sea, of active participation in the current debate on the economy of the sea, and as a proponent of practical and contingent projects, allows us to believe that we can make a difference.
Another moment of aggregation for those who work on the themes of the sea economy, shipping, logistics, transport and maritime tourism in the Sicilian Region – in its excellence and in its Mediterranean and international projection – was the MID.MED Shipping & Energy Forum (Messina, 25-26 June 2024), an event organised by the Propeller Club Port of Palermo together with the Catania section with the aim of creating a meeting point between the maritime-logistics cluster and the production sectors of the reference macro-regions.
The International Propeller Club Ports of Catania & Southeastern Sicily is planning other technical tables between the economic and institutional stakeholders to help realise the projects presented: not only the opening of the waterfront of the Port of Catania by separating the commercial area of the port from the cruise area and open to the public; but also the implementation of services to cruise ships by means of self-propelled platform refuelling, an important turning point for the blue & green economy; the implementation of internal and connection infrastructures; not forgetting the facilitation of micro and small enterprises in the area that in the development of logistics services, and not only, of the sea can find a new source of wealth and expansion.

The topics to be dealt with are, and will be, multiple and do not only concern ports. Let us not underestimate the importance of transport in the latu sensu sense, including lines that connect the naval route with the land route and area; shipbuilding; nautical pleasure; tourism; training; and all services connected to the sea.

While waiting to create an effective network also in the other territories of South-Eastern Sicily and to implement our cohort of professionals who, believing in the importance of the economic impact of this sector, will want to make themselves available for the promotion of the one common interest of being a ‘propeller for our sea’, The International Propeller Club Ports of Catania & Southeastern Sicily has the ambition to be there, to be the driving force behind the culture of the blue economy, to promote the development, training and interaction of sea professionals, from shipping to pleasure boating, from maritime transport to the cruise world, from logistics to tourism, from maritime security to maritime management, from marketing to communication with a single denominator: making a system… sea system!
