Corto Maltese – sailor of all seas
What links the tireless and fascinating Venetian sailor, born out of the pencil of Hugo Pratt, with ports and seaside towns? The journey, the adventure, the discovery of new worlds and new cultures. Leading protagonist in the world of comics or, to be more precise, of the “drawn literature” over the last 50 years, Corto Maltese has crossed all the seas of the earth, visiting the most remote places, has approached different peoples and cultures, dragging his readers in a daring wandering around the globe. Corto Maltese now arrives in Genoa with an exhibition dedicated to the Southern Seas that have made him an icon of adventure, freedom and discovery. A tribute, made up of 200 original plates and watercolors, which is entitled “Hugo Pratt. From Genoa to the South Seas” hosted at Palazzo Ducale from 14 October 2021 to 20 March 2022.
Genoa belongs to the story of Corto Maltese because it was the meeting with the local publisher Florenzo Ivaldi that determined its success on the pages of his magazine Sgt. Kirk, which came out on newsstands for the first time in July 1967. In that first issue also appeared an unpublished adventure entitled A Ballad of the Salty Sea which consecrated Pratt and his sailor with an earring to recognition by the general public. In memory of that bond, therefore, the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition has taken the form of an imaginary issue of the magazine, also enriched with an unpublished history for Europe, thanks to the Argentine collectors Guillermo Parker and Aldo Pravia: The justice of Wahtee, published in Super Misterix in May 1955.
The exhibition retraces the Pratt imaginary world leading us in the different itineraries of his artistic path – from the Africa of his adolescence to the Argentina of his youth, from the Venice of his childhood to the South Seas, from Stonehenge to Rapa Nui to Easter Island and all those destinations able to satisfy an inexhaustible curiosity: boundless horizons, navigations on all types of boats, deserts, wars and rebellions, the Argentine pampas, seductive women, Irish separatists, mercenaries, Indians, woods and prairies of the unforgettable atmospheres of Wheeling and Ticonderoga.
Cynical but sentimental, individualistic but generous, Hugo Pratt with his alter ego Corto Maltese has broken through the hearts of several generations who have learned to go “beyond the mirror”, to cross the threshold of mystery and fantasy following the seductive footsteps of an indomitable dreamer.
In the stories of Corto Maltese, Hugo Pratt gives life to the places of his dreams, born from the reading of the great literary classics of adventure such as R.L. Stevenson, Conrad, Melville, Jack London, Somerset Maugham, but also from the big screen inspired by the faces of American actors, from Clark Gable to Marlon Brando, unforgettable mutineers of the Bounty. Words and images that, while moving in a field of imagination, always draw historical information from reliable and first-hand sources.
And, in this perpetual travelling, Venice, city of birth and education, always emerges as an explicit or suggested constant, as if it were – as a city of lagoon and sea waters – the origin and starting point of that broad and inexhaustible horizon that Pratt was able to cross.

Cosa lega l’instancabile e affascinante marinaio veneziano, uscito dalla matita di Hugo Pratt, con i porti e le città di mare? Il viaggio, l’avventura, la scoperta di nuovi mondi e di nuove culture. Protagonista di primo piano nel mondo del fumetto o, meglio, della “letteratura disegnata” degli ultimi 50 anni, Corto Maltese ha solcato tutti i mari della terra, visitandone gli anfratti più remoti, ha approcciato popoli e culture diverse, trasportando i suoi lettori in un rocambolesco vagabondaggio intorno al globo. Corto Maltese approda ora a Genova con una mostra dedicata ai Mari del Sud che lo hanno reso un’icona dell’avventura, della libertà e della scoperta. Un omaggio, composto di 200 tra tavole e acquerelli originali, che si intitola appunto “Hugo Pratt. Da Genova ai Mari del Sud” ospitato a Palazzo Ducale dal 14 ottobre 2021 al 20 marzo 2022.

Genova appartiene alla storia di Corto Maltese perché fu l’incontro con l’editore locale Florenzo Ivaldi a determinarne il successo sulle pagine della sua rivista Sgt. Kirk, uscita in edicola per la prima volta nel luglio del 1967. In quel primo numero fece la comparsa anche un’avventura inedita dal titolo Una ballata del mare salato che consacrò Pratt e il suo marinaio con l’orecchino al riconoscimento da parte del grande pubblico. In memoria di quel legame, pertanto, il catalogo che accompagna la mostra ha preso le sembianze di un immaginario numero della rivista, arricchito anche di una storia inedita per l’Europa, grazie ai collezionisti argentini Guillermo Parker e Aldo Pravia: La giustizia di Wahtee, pubblicata su Super Misterix nel maggio del 1955.

La mostra ripercorre l’immaginario prattiano conducendoci nei diversi itinerari del suo percorso artistico – dall’Africa dell’adolescenza all’Argentina della giovinezza, dalla Venezia dell’infanzia ai Mari del Sud, da Stonehenge a Rapa Nui all’Isola di Pasqua e a tutte quelle destinazioni necessarie a soddisfare una curiosità inesauribile: orizzonti sconfinati, navigazioni su ogni tipo di imbarcazione, deserti, guerre e ribellioni, la pampa argentina, donne seducenti, indipendentisti irlandesi, mercenari, indiani, boschi e praterie delle indimenticabili atmosfere di Wheeling e Ticonderoga.

Cinico ma sentimentale, individualista ma generoso, Hugo Pratt con il suo alter ego Corto Maltese ha fatto breccia nel cuore di più generazioni che hanno imparato ad andare “oltre lo specchio”, a varcare la soglia del mistero e della fantasia seguendo le orme seducenti di un indomito sognatore.
Nelle storie di Corto Maltese, Hugo Pratt dà vita ai luoghi dei suoi sogni, nati dalla lettura dei grandi classici della letteratura di avventura quali R.L. Stevenson, Conrad, Melville, Jack London, Somerset Maugham, ma anche dal grande schermo nei volti del cinema americano, da Clark Gable a Marlon Brando, indimenticabili ammutinati del Bounty. Parole e immagini che pur muovendosi in un ambito di fantasia, pescano sempre da fonti certe e di prima mano le informazioni storiche.

E in questo perpetuo viaggiare Venezia, città di nascita e di formazione, emerge sempre come una costante, esplicita o suggerita, come se fosse, città d’acque – di laguna e mare –,l’origine e il punto di partenza di quell’orizzonte ampio e inesauribile che Pratt fu capace di solcare.
