The “Faro a Faro” Project will Transform the Waterfront to Consolidate Cartagena as a Major Capital of the Mediterranean

8 Giugno, 2024

Cartagena has been gazing at the sea for years in a transformation process that is allowing citizens to enjoy a great bay and the consolidation as a major tourist capital of the Mediterranean through a port-city integration model that encompasses the entire Cartagena basin, the closest to the city, home to shipyards, our Navy and fishermen, and increasingly urban nature.

The “Faro a Faro” project encompasses ten kilometres for the citizens, from the urban beach of Cala Cortina and Curra Lighthouse to Navidad Lighthouse through several actions, divided into phases, that will make Cartagena a more open, lively, and modern city. These include investments in accessibility, mobility, energy efficiency to generate dynamic areas with commercial premises, rest areas, and also recreational spaces.

Among these actions is the Plaza Mayor Project, whose first phase was completed last year with the remodelling of part of the waterfront and the emblematic Héroes de Cavite square, which links the port with the city, and has achieved the set objective of turning our seafront into the centre of social, cultural, and sports life of Cartagena, as well as a revitalizing effect with the opening of new catering businesses that add quality to the tourist offer, where visitors can enjoy gastronomic experiences that can only be lived in Cartagena.

The next phase is being drafted to act in the surroundings of the “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” Cruise Terminal. As the main entry point for foreign tourism in the Region of Murcia, this space aims to be a tourist showcase with a commercial gallery that offers updated and detailed information on events, activities, and local festivals, as well as all the cultural and heritage offer that no city the size of Cartagena has. Such is the reorganization of the area to remove architectural barriers that obstruct the view from the sea to the land, promoting the visibility of the Carlos III Wall.

Another project that is about to be completed is the new path to the only urban beach of Cartagena, Cala Cortina, where citizens will be able to enjoy unique landscapes in the Region of Murcia surrounded by coastal batteries. An area of over 3,000 meters that will be enhanced with paving, tree planting, green areas, efficient lighting, and urban furniture, benefiting around 400 people who use the path daily for walking, sports, or accessing the beach, as well as allowing bicycle access by eliminating stairs or architectural barriers. Citizens will be able to enjoy unique landscapes in the Region of Murcia surrounded by the coastal batteries of Santa Ana and San Isidoro and Santa Florentina, defensive fortifications of the city dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.

And in this commitment to remodel our entire seafront, in the area that reaches to our Navidad Lighthouse, emblem of the city, we are providing access to the area known as El Espalmador, with a friendly, hiking, and sports route for the enjoyment of all citizens, reclaiming a large area, linked to naval and military history, to turn it into an attractive area for Carthaginians and visitors, which in recent years has become a preferred route for sports enthusiasts and will add value to Cartagena as a tourist destination, connecting it with the city.

These are all major port-city integration projects that will contribute to the dynamism of a Cartagena where the port is the heart of the city.
