As the current (Italian) President of RETE, I am particularly pleased with the choice of dedicating the ‘Portrait’ of this issue of PORTUS to the Port City of Livorno, seven years on from the dossier on Genoa, traditionally considered the main Port City of Italy.
It is also worth mentioning that this is the Portrait for issue number 40 of PORTUS, RETE’s six-monthly magazine, which, against the dramatic backdrop of 2020, celebrates its twentieth year.
I believe that this decision is significant not only because Livorno is of decisive importance within the Italian port system, but also because this historic port, so intimately linked to an extraordinary city, is experiencing a phase of growth and development which, on the one hand, will bring about a decisive impulse for its future and, on the other hand, will enable an incisive and effective improvement in the relationship with the historic city and the entire regional territory it serves.
The contributions contained in this Portrait give insight into the nature of this centuries-old relationship, highlighting lesser-known or little-valued aspects and thus updating and renewing the image of one of the foremost Italian urban-port nodes and its necessary and inevitable role at European and international level.
The current, profound crisis associated with the Covid 19 pandemic will also be an extraordinary test-bed for the port city of Livorno, not only in overcoming this terrible period, but also for planning and implementing an unprecedented effort and using this as an opportunity to redesign the image and functioning of this beautiful city, symbiotically linked to its port.
I should like offer my sincere thanks all the authors involved in ‘painting’ this Portrait of the development over the centuries and today’s reality of this complex and articulated urban reality.
I should also like to thank the Mayor of Livorno, Luca Salvetti, the President of the Port System Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea, Stefano Corsini and Giuseppe Tarzia, Tuscany Maritime Director, for sharing their views on the key issues regarding the future of Livorno.
My heartfelt thanks go especially to Barbara Bonciani, an active supporter of RETE for many years, who, in her capacity as Municipal Councillor of Livorno for all matters related to the Port and port-city integration, undertook the planning and co-ordination of the Portrait throughout the various stages leading to the completion of this editorial project, which I feel certain you’ll enjoy reading!

Come attuale Presidente (italiano) di RETE mi è particolarmente gradita la scelta di dedicare il ‘Portrait’ di questo numero di PORTUS a una città portuale italiana, Livorno, che dopo ben sette anni, fa seguito al dossier dedicato a Genova, tradizionalmente considerata la principale città portuale d’Italia.
Vorrei anche ricordare che questo è il Portrait del numero 40 di PORTUS, rivista semestrale di RETE, che festeggia in questo drammatico 2020 il suo ventesimo anno di vita.
Ritengo che questa decisione sia significativa non solo perché Livorno riveste un’importanza decisiva nel contesto del sistema portuale italiano, ma anche perché questo porto storico, così intimamente legato a una città straordinaria, sta vivendo una fase di crescita e sviluppo che, da una parte, consentirà di concretare un impulso decisivo per il suo futuro e, dall’altra, permetterà di migliorare in modo incisivo ed efficace la relazione con la città storica e l’intero territorio regionale di riferimento.
I diversi contributi contenuti in questo Portrait illuminano i distinti caratteri di questo secolare rapporto, aiutando anche a mettere in evidenza aspetti meno noti o poco valutati, costruendo in tal modo un’immagine aggiornata ed innovativa di uno dei principali nodi urbano-portuali italiani, una visione calata nella sua necessaria ed obbligata dimensione europea ed internazionale.
L’attuale, profonda, crisi legata alla pandemia da Covid 19, sarà anche per la città portuale di Livorno uno straordinario banco di prova non solo per uscire da questo terribile evento, ma come in altri casi, per programmare e realizzare in tempi stretti un inedito sforzo, chissà prima difficilmente immaginabile, ma che oggi può significare l’opportunità di ridisegnare l’immagine e il funzionamento di questa bellissima città, simbioticamente legata al suo porto.
Vorrei ringraziare di cuore tutti gli autori che hanno partecipato alla ‘costruzione’ di questo Portrait, per averci aiutato a leggere ed interpretare l’evoluzione storica e la situazione odierna di questa complessa e articolata realtà urbana.
Vorrei anche sottolineare la cortese disponibilità del Sindaco di Livorno, Luca Salvetti, del Presidente dell’Autorità del Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Settentrionale, Stefano Corsini, e di Giuseppe Tarzia, Direttore Marittimo della Toscana, per aver offerto il loro punto di vista su tematiche essenziali per il futuro di Livorno.
Ma il mio ringraziamento più profondo va soprattutto a Barbara Bonciani, da anni attiva amica di RETE che, nella sua qualità di Assessore del Comune di Livorno per tutte le materie legate al Porto e all’integrazione porto-città, si è fatta carico del disegno generale del Portrait e del suo concreto coordinamento, nelle diverse fasi di attuazione di questo progetto editoriale.
