¿Puede un evento gastronómico reunir a 10.000 logísticos de todo el mundo? Sí y así está sucediendo en el puerto de Valencia desde que, en el año 1990, tuviera lugar la primera edición del entonces conocido como el Concurso de Paellas y hoy consolidado como la Fiesta de la Logística de Valencia-Concurso Mundial de Paellas para Empresas del Sector Logístico.

Décadas de celebraciones, cambios de ubicaciones para adecuarse a las necesidades de los participantes, bonanzas, crisis económicas y la pandemia de la COVID-19 han marcado el año a año de esta celebración que ya se ha convertido en un evento único del calendario logístico nacional e internacional por su repercusión social y empresarial. Una dualidad única que confirma a la iniciativa como uno de los ejemplos vivos más longevos de integración puerto-ciudad.

Can a gastronomic event bring together 10,000 logistics professionals from all over the world? Yes, and this has been happening in the Port of Valencia since 1990, when the first Paella Competition (renamed the Valencia Logistics Festival-World Paella Competition for Logistics Companies) was held.

Decades of celebrations, changes of locations to accommodate the participants, economic booms and crises and the COVID-19 pandemic have all marked the annual festival that is now a unique event in the national and international logistics calendar thanks to its social and business impact. This unique combination of cuisine and logistics confirms the initiative as one of the oldest examples of port-city integration.

En este sentido, no se puede dejar de destacar que, por un lado, la Fiesta de la Logística (organizada por Grupo Diario) facilita la divulgación de las tradiciones y sabores de la cultura valenciana, concentrando todo el protagonismo del evento en el plato gastronómico más popular e internacional de la capital del Turia: la paella. Y es que los asistentes no sólo confraternizan, sino que cocinan y participan en un concurso en el que los mejores chefs serán galardonados.

Además, la propuesta tiene lugar en marzo, cuando la ciudad celebra sus fiestas mayores, las Fallas, que, obviamente, también se dan a conocer en el evento a través de la presencia activa de comisiones falleras invitadas a la cita, la música y el disparo de una mascletá.

El ambiente fallero, sus colores y olores son el contexto orgánico de la Fiesta. Es más, muchos de los asistentes aprovechan la cita para hacer turismo, conocer las bondades de la ciudad y hasta (los más atrevidos) tirar petardos, que son ya habituales en las calles valencianas durante esos días.

In this sense, it is worth noting that the Logistics Festival (organized by Grupo Diario) promotes awareness of the traditions and flavours of Valencian culture focusing on its most famous, internationally known dish: paella. Participants also get to socialise as well as the chance to cook and take part in a competition which rewards the best chefs.

In addition, the event takes place in March, when the city celebrates its main festivities, Fallas, which are also publicised at the event with local Fallas associations being invited to take part, as well as music and a mascletá (firework display).

The Fallas atmosphere, its colours and smells are the organic context of the event. What’s more, many of the participants take advantage of the event to go sightseeing, get to know the city and the most daring even set off firecrackers, which are commonplace in the streets of Valencia during this time.

Por otro lado, la cita tiene lugar en la ciudad que acoge uno de los principales hubs del transporte marítimo mundial: el puerto de Valencia. Gracias a la Fiesta, la dimensión del enclave logístico, con su comunidad logística-portuaria en el centro, se proyecta a la ciudadanía en una esfera distinta a la habitual.

En este contexto, el puerto y las empresas que en él operan dejan de ser sólo inversiones, cifras y tráficos portuarios, para ser las personas que integran un colectivo económico vital para el desarrollo social del territorio, sus proyectos e innovaciones.

In addition, the event takes place in the city that is home to one of the world’s main shipping hubs: the Port of Valencia. Thanks to the Festival, the facility, with its port-logistics community at the core, is presented to the public in a different light.

In this context, the port and the companies operating in it are no longer just investments, numbers and port traffic, instead they are people who make up an economic sector that is vital for the social development of the region, and for its projects and innovations.

Dar visibilidad al sector logístico-portuario

Raising the Profile of the Logistics-Port Industry

El 16 de marzo de 1990 tuvo lugar el primer Concurso Mundial de Paellas en la calle Dr. J.J. Dómine de Valencia. Bajo un sol radiante, se cocinaron 43 paellas y se reunieron 500 personas. Las siguientes convocatorias confirmaron el éxito de la propuesta, el sector sintió la Fiesta como propia y se fueron alcanzando las 100 paellas inscritas, las 200, las 300… Se tuvo que cambiar de ubicación. De Dr. JJ Dómine a las Atarazanas y de ahí a la antigua Estación del Grao de Valencia. 33 años después, en la edición de 2023, se sobrepasaron todas las expectativas de los organizadores y se cocinaron 875 paellas.

Llegados de toda España y de diferentes lugares del mundo, el evento gastronómico, lúdico y profesional, simbiosis del buen rollo y el networking, reunió en su última edición a cerca de 10.000 personas; sin ninguna duda, una de las mayores concentraciones de profesionales del sector logístico del mundo.

Precisamente esta dualidad de ocio-trabajo es la que más destacan los asistentes al evento. “Me atrevo a asegurar que la Fiesta de la Logística de Valencia es uno de los eventos más relevantes del año para los empresarios y directivos del sector por la gran oportunidad que supone de hacer networking y estrechar los lazos personales en un ambiente diferente al estrictamente laboral”, destaca Alfredo Soler, presidente de la Asociación de Directivos y Empresarios Logísticos de Valencia (Propeller Valencia).

La Fiesta es un elemento cohesionador y vertebrador de la Comunidad Logístico-Portuaria, “que iguala a todas las personas independientemente de sus cargos, y fortalece el sentido de pertenencia a un colectivo profesional. Adicionalmente, es una magnífica oportunidad para que nuestro sector se muestre a la sociedad y se integre en una dinámica social que trasciende del ámbito laboral”, asevera Soler.

On 16th March 1990, the first World Paella Competition took place in Dr. J.J. Dómine Street in Valencia. Under a radiant sun, 43 paellas were cooked and 500 people attended. The following years confirmed the success of the initiative, with the industry making the festival its own, and the number of registered paellas grew to 100, 200, 300… The location had to be changed. From Dr. JJ Dómine to the Atarazanas and from there to the old Grao Station in Valencia. Thirty-three years later, in 2023, the organisers’ expectations were totally exceeded with a total of 875 paellas.

This culinary, recreational and professional event, which is the perfect combination of good vibes and networking, brought together nearly 10,000 people from all over Spain and around the globe, making it one of the largest gatherings of logistics industry representatives in the world.

Precisely this leisure-work combination is what the event’s attendees most value. “I would go so far as to say that the Valencia Logistics Festival is one of the most important events of the year for business people and industry managers because of the incredible opportunities it provides to network and strengthen personal ties in an environment that is not strictly work-related”, stresses Alfredo Soler, Chairman of the Valencia Logistics Managers and Entrepreneurs Association (Propeller Valencia).

The Festival creates strong ties and serves to bring together the logistics and port community, “making all people equal, regardless of their job title, and strengthening the sense of belonging to a professional group. In addition, it is a magnificent opportunity for our industry to showcase itself to society and become part of a social phenomenon that transcends the workplace”, says Soler.

En este mismo sentido se manifiesta Manuel Guerra, adjunto a la Presidencia de la Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia: “Para mí la Fiesta tiene dos cosas muy buenas. Por un lado, me permite confraternizar con los compañeros con los que tengo menos trato o que son de niveles distintos de la Organización (algo que a nivel empresa también pasa); y, por otro, la Fiesta facilita el encuentro de la comunidad portuaria y la visibilización del sector de Valencia, de su potencial y magnitud, porque, en un día en un mismo lugar, se reúnen miles de personas que trabajan en él”.

Para el presidente del Colegio Oficial de Agentes de Aduanas y Representantes Aduaneros de Valencia, Emilio Guardiola, el evento es un lugar de encuentro de las empresas del colectivo portuario, tanto a nivel de directivos como empleados, “que de una forma relajada por el contexto (fiesta al aire libre, informal, etc.), pueden relacionarse e incluso conocerse (ya que la relación entre empleados sobre todo es a nivel de teléfono y email), con lo que se crea una humanización de las personas y las empresas. En consecuencia, se fortalece y estrechan lazos entre el colectivo”.

Y por si alguien tuviera dudas, Emilio Guardiola subraya que el interés de la cita “gastronómica, participativa y festera”, se confirma con la participación de los diferentes roles de la cadena de suministro, tanto privados como organismos oficiales. “Este vínculo crea un sentimiento de nuestro trabajo con respecto al medio (Puerto y todo lo que está relacionado con él) y de apropiación de nuestros valores como valencianos”, opina el presidente de los aduaneros.

Manuel Guerra, Assistant to the Chairman of the Port Authority of Valencia, agreed: “The Festival has two very good things going for it. Firstly, it means I can socialise with colleagues I don’t see as often or who are at different levels of the organisation (something that also happens at company level); and, secondly, the Festival brings the port community get together and makes the industry, its potential and its size more visible in Valencia, as thousands of people who work in the sector come together in the same place on the same day”.

For the Chairman of the Valencia Customs Agents and Customs Representatives Association, Emilio Guardiola, the event is a meeting place for port companies, both at management and employee level, “who can interact and get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere (open air party, informal, etc.) (as the relationship between employees is mainly by telephone and email), thus establishing personal and company relations. As a result, it reinforces and strengthens ties between the group.

And just in case anyone had any doubts, Emilio Guardiola confirmed that the interest in this “culinary, participative and festive” event is shared by both private and public bodies in the supply chain. “This link creates a sense of belonging to our industry in relation to the environment (Port and all that is related to it) and a feeling of our values as Valencians”, says the Customs Association Chairman.

Por su parte, la vicepresidenta de las empresas de transporte de mercancías por carretera unidas en FVET-Puerto, Lorena Ballester, comenta que es de interés un evento como la Fiesta de la Logística de Valencia para los logístico-portuarios “porque es nuestro día grande, el más esperado y el que más poder de convocatoria tiene. No hay otro día que una a más personas de nuestro sector. Ni ferias ni congresos ni foros. Es el día en el que todos nos sentimos parte de la misma comunidad y los cociner@s de las paellas se convierten en los líderes de las empresas”.

Es más, destaca Ballester, “es un día único para poner cara a las personas que hay detrás de los correos, llamadas y de todo el trabajo, directo e indirecto, que hace posible mover cada contenedor. Es el punto de encuentro obligado, no sólo para proveedores y clientes que se saludan por primera vez, también para disfrutar de la amistad con las personas que, tras años trabajando, se han convertido en nuestros mejores amigos. Ese día es nuestro día”.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chairwoman of the road haulage companies belonging to FVET-Puerto, Lorena Ballester, said that the Valencia Logistics Festival appeals to logistics and port companies “because it is our big day, the one we all look forward to, and the one that attracts the most people. There is no other day that brings together more people from our industry. There are no other trade fairs, congresses or forums that have the same pulling power. It is the day when we all feel part of the same community and the paella chefs become the company leaders”.

Ballester also pointed out, “it is a special day when we can put a face to the people behind the mails, calls and all the direct and indirect hard work that enables each container to be moved. It is the ideal meeting place, not only for suppliers and customers who are meeting for the first time, but also for enjoying the friendships with people who we have become close to during many years of hard work. It is our day”.

Asimismo, Luis Rosa, presidente de los transitarios de ATEIA OLTRA Valencia, pone en valor del evento “el encontrarme con amigos que no veo a menudo o con amigos que, en general, veo con ocasión de nuestras relaciones profesionales vía Marca de Garantía u otros casos complejos tipo PCF o Aduanas o transportistas. Siempre es muy agradable y es una gran ocasión para fortalecer amistades o endulzar futuras situaciones que serán más duras. Desde el punto de vista humano, la cita es excelente”.

Likewise, Luis Rosa, Chairman of the ATEIA OLTRA Valencia freight forwarders, highlighted the value of the event “it is great for meeting friends that I don’t see often or friends who, in general, I see in a professional capacity and in other complex areas such as the Border Inspection Post, Customs or over haulier issues. It is always very pleasant and a great opportunity to strengthen friendships and to smooth out future situations that may be tough. From a people perspective, the meeting is excellent”.

Por último, damos la palabra al Organizador de la cita, Paco Prado, director general de Grupo Diario, quien subraya que, “desde nuestros orígenes, en Diario del Puerto hemos apostado por poner todo nuestro empeño en fomentar la unidad del sector, para convertirlo, poco a poco, en lo que nos gusta llamar ‘la familia logística’. Parte crucial de esa ambiciosa aspiración pasa por reunir al colectivo de vez en cuando, en torno a la mesa, como ocurren en toda familia. Reunirlos a todo, no sólo a los cabezas de cada empresa, sino a todos. Así, cada año, convocamos a comer juntos a todos los logísticos, en Madrid, Barcelona, Algeciras o Valencia, en torno a un cocido, una butifarrada, un plato de papas con choco o unas paellas. Ya llevamos 45 de estas convocatorias, a cuál más exitosas. Llegamos a congregar a más de 10.000 logísticos, en lo que ya es considerado como la reunión de profesionales de nuestro sector más grande del mundo o, sencillamente, la familia comiendo junta”.

Finally, we give the floor to the organiser of the event, Paco Prado, Managing Director of Grupo Diario, who pointed out that, “Diario del Puerto has always been committed to bringing the industry together, and gradually turning it into what we call ‘a logistics family’. A crucial part of this ambition is to bring the collective together around the table from time to time, as though it were a family. The idea is to bring everybody together, not just the senior managers. So, every year, we invite all the logistics experts to eat together in Madrid, Barcelona, Algeciras and Valencia, sampling different regional dishes, like the paella. We have already held 45 of these events, which are increasingly popular. We have managed to bring together more than 10,000 logistics experts, in what is already considered the largest gathering of industry professionals in the world or, quite simply, the family eating together”.
