Industrial clusters and waterfront’s regeneration. The Renzo Piano’s “Blueprint” for Genoa

 

ABSTRACT

Generally, the waterfront redevelopment projects regarding disused port areas where it is useful to include new urban uses. In the case study presented, the innovative element is that they must combine the development of the port with the redevelopment of the city: the Renzo Piano “Blueprint” is the starting point for redesign sustainably the ship repair areas of the port and the new social spaces of the city. The Genoese cluster of yachting and the maxi yacht has reached the second place at national level by number of employees and active companies. Genoa is therefore faced with two major challenges to overcome: ensure the optimization of use of port areas occupied by the shipyards favoring, at the same time, the realization of the project of redevelopment of the waterfront, in the areas between the Porto Antico (Old Port) and the of Corso Italia promenade in eastern part of the city. In the Italian economic system yachting is the sector that, over the past 20 years, recorded the best increase of its exports. The combined turnover of the sector has recorded, for the year 2015, a value of 2,9 billion euro, with an increase of 17,1% on 2014; even the employees have increased by 3% on 2014 bringing to 18.130 the total number of direct employees. The maxi yacht (length > 24 mt.) market contributed to sales with a production of 862 million euro, representing the 28% of the value of the sector.
