Santander, a seaport

28 Agosto, 2014

On the Atlantic seaboard halfway along the Spanish Cantabrian coast and sheltered by the largest bay of the northern Iberian Peninsula, Santander is a seaport and a tourist, university, and services city that is appreciated by residents and visitors alike for its amazing combination of nature and landscape. Together with the quality of its cultural and academic infrastructure and its wide range of leisure, sporting, and business activities, this explains its high quality of life.

With some two hundred thousand inhabitants, Santander is the largest town in Cantabria and its main economic and social centre. It constitutes a node of communications consisting of motorways, railways, its port, and its airport that give it convenient connections to business and international transport networks.

The Port, which is situated on the north and west shores of the Bay, is the original nucleus of the city as well as being one of the major powerhouses of its economic development. It has played an essential part in both the modelling of its morphological features and its personality and urban identity.

PORTUS has thought it appropriate to devote the “Portrait” section to Santander, not only because we understand that this seaport is an outstanding example of port-city interaction but also because we consider that the dialogue and the agreements achieved in recent years constitute an interesting example of the reconciliation of interests and of the definition of an innovative collaboration model. It promotes strategies designed both to invigorate and position them competitively on world markets and to improve the quality of life and local welfare.

This “Portrait” is also a reflection of the aforementioned collaboration, as its contents have been designed and coordinated by the Municipal Office of the Strategic Plan and the Santander Port Authority, who have worked closely with the PORTUS publishing team.

By means of the various thematic blocks that shape the monograph, therefore, the idea has been to provide the reader with knowledge of the timeframe and the territorial background on which the port and city of Santander have developed. In addition, it portrays the main characteristics and dynamics that define its current situation, hints at things to come with a look at its future strategies, and describes the process of the remodelling of its waterfront. All this is complemented with a glance at some of its special features, which from a cultural viewpoint give the life of the city its character, personality, and maritime identity.

Santander, ciudad portuaria
