The project Paojiang Lake District wins MIPIM/Architectural Review Future Projects “Big Urban Project” Award 2014.

Shaoxing city, located in the Yangtze River Delta economic area, is famous for its water, canals and bridges. To the north of it is Shanghai city, to the west of it is Hangzhou, while PaoJiang Lake District is located in north Shaoxing. The site, in a strategic location, will become a new center for residential and multi-use developments, connected by an extensive pedestrian network, multi-modal transit infrastructure, public transportation (bike, bus and future subway links to Shaoxing) and high-speed train. In fact, the government wants to create an amenity rich environment around an existing lake, in order to attract investors and residents to the district.

Is a major project which has incorporated a site specific design approach – using a tool that is at the same time a Master Plan and a Landscape Plan for an area of approximately 4 Square Kilometers (360,000 Sq. Meters of built-up areas) – and that providing welcome relief from the intense adjacent urban development.

The site is currently characterized by the presence of a large lake (Yang Jing Bang Lake – 4 Sq Km) and farm fields.

The architect Paul Lukez, in collaboration with an international team of contributors, sought to create a project articulated around a series of parks distributed along the lake, representative of the five elements that create areas with distinct identities and sets of experiences, and play an important part in chinese culture and Literature: gold, fire, wood, earth and water.

The associated programs, uses, amenities, materials, forms and spaces are closely related to these elements. Each zone associated with each element has a prominent landmark or icon, visible from one or more of the neighboring zones.

The overall design along the lake is intended to not only activate the park, making good use of this natural resource, but to create an attractive environment for future development in and around the district.

The “water” element is marked by a tower with hydraulic water systems and other landmarks in the distance (pools, beaches, spas and other water related uses). The strategically located icons and corridors emphasise panoramic and scenic views.
